]]>I'm sort of joining Thomas Hawk with his $2 portrait project, but knocking it down to $1, like Justin Korn. (I'm a struggling student.)

What's the premise? I'll offer $1 to anyone who asks me for money in exchange for their portrait. I'm a shy person, but I'll do my best to find out a little about the person. You never know if it'll make someone's day for just talking to them for a little bit.

Fourteen months ago, Wayne flew to Los Angeles from Hawaii. He held a tall can in a brown paper bag, sipping beer - I can't remember which brand.

I wished him well and continued on my photowalk.

]]>Unlike my other photo of the Mel's Drive-In sign near Hollywood and Highland, producing this was more involved.

I got closer because there was a billboard behind and to the left of the "Open 24 Hours" sign. Then, I took three landscape exposures (from bottom to top) to create a panorama.

After stitching the photos together, I used lens correction to reduce the distortion 18mm would make. Then, I cloned out the corner of a building at the lower left side of the frame.

Since I finally learned [non-destructive] dodging and burning, I used that technique to subtly brighten the darker areas of the sign.

Back in Lightroom, I square cropped the photo then used a few presets:

* Matt's Auto Adjustment (Everything Else)
* Matt's Edge Darkening 1 (Light)
* Matt's Deep Blue Sky (Level 1)

To finish things off, I slightly increased the exposure and fill light to my liking.

Since I can't get a 50mm f/1.2, I have to settle for this. :)

This is a panorama photo with minimal post processing. I know some people will just say to blur in Photoshop or GIMP, but I like this technique. (See "The Brenizer Effect.')

Technical specs: 36 RAW photos (exported 1600 pixels long) stitched together with Adobe Photoshop CS3, all taken in Aperture Priority at f/1.8, ISO 200 (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II)
